Anne, Lilly, and Eric ran into the building to see Pam Peterson at the top of the stairs, looking down at the unmoving body of Nigel Vanderpool.

“I think he’s dead!” Pam shouted.

Just then, the front door burst open. Quigley came tumbling in, wrestling with someone he had pinned underneath him.

“Quigley, what’s going on?” she demanded.

“He’s trying to escape,” Quigley shouted.

Quigley lifted himself up, and Lilly saw the limp figure pinned under him. It was Seth.

“Oh, Seth,” Lilly said. “What have you done?”

Then she noticed the Shepherds mysteriously standing in the empty dining room.

“What on earth …?” Lilly asked incredulously.

The rest of the guests emerged from their rooms to investigate the tumult. Chef Henry peeked in from the kitchen. One after another, they began whispering as they looked down over the banister from the upper level of the inn.

“The kid killed Nigel Vanderpool,” Lilly could hear Pam whisper.

“Oh dear,” Mrs. Shepherd gasped.

“We’d better call Chief Crowder,” Anne said to Eric.

“What should I tell her?” Eric asked.

“Tell her there’s been a murder at Magnolia Manor,” Lilly said. “Again.”
